Manchester Evening News -Tracey Sanders-Wood- A picture for playtime Tuesday, March 4, 1997

A PLAYGROUND in a former run down area of Manchester has been illuminated by a colour mosaic to illustrate its rebirth. Artist Tracey sanders-Wood designed the sign incorporating a phoenix for the North Hulme adventure playground. Her use of the mythical bird which burnt itself on a funeral pyre before rising again is doubly apt. It was also a symbol of Herbert Birley, owner of a mill which stood on the site - now occupied by the Dunlop Works at the border of Hulme and the city centre. Tracey's work was commissioned by the City Challenge child-care development team as part of the third phase of Hulme's regeneration. the playground has equipment built from wood on a massive scale. tracey said: "The lettering was designed from territorial street graffiti which was sprayed on the playground's fencing."
